Maximising employability

We have factsheets on job hunting, CVs and covering letters and interview technique for you.

There are several things you can do during your degree that will make you more attractive to prospective employers or PhD supervisors:

  • Take every opportunity to get some hands on experience, whether that means a summer placement in a lab, volunteering to help out at a science event or writing for your uni newspaper.
  • Become a member of a scientific society, for example if you join the SGM there are grants available to present projects at an SGM scientific conferences (an excellent networking opportunity), and grants to attend careers conferences.
  • Get involved; if you join a sports club volunteer to become a committee member. Volunteer to help out at your universities open days.
  • Think about the transferable skills in your part-time jobs. How can you show that you are "proactive", "organised" and an "excellent team player" on your CV?
